Deposit Reminder

Hello everyone! Just a quick reminder for everyone that has an existing reservation for 2012. Your deposits are required and you can send up a check or use our secure credit card deposit page. If you are in the Chicago area, and are planning on dropping your deposit off at the All-Canada show in St. Charles (Jan 12-15, 2012) just let us know so we know to expect you.

Please note if you are mailing your deposit in, you will require extra postage to get it to Canada. I always tell people to just put on an extra stamp.

Outdoors Card Renewal

We have had many guests inquire about the renewal notice that have received in the mail from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. The credit card sized outdoors card that many of you have received over the past few years needs to be re-newed every three years. You will need to just renew the outdoors card, but you don't have to purchase your license. That will be done once you arrive at the resort. Ontario now has an automated license system, so all you will need to do is swipe your outdoors card once you arrive, and it will print out a license for you. You have to have the outdoors card however. I believe the 3 year renewal is about $10. If you have any questions, just send me an email or give me a call.

The best ice in years

We had a great freeze last week. The lake is frozen to a perfect sheen, and you can go as far as you want. We haven't seen these conditions in years. Here are a few photos from the week-end with the family doing some skating in front of camp.

Ally is standing over the jug on parking lot reef. You can see all the rocks and boulders when you are on the ice, but the camera does not pick it up as well.

Here is a shot of camp that you may not get too see. We don't have a lot of snow right now, that's why we have these exceptional ice conditions.

The one thing about playing hockey on the lake is that if you miss a hard pass from the other player, you may have a long skate to retrieve the puck.

Yes I know it has been a long time since the last post here, but I have been a little busy racing to get everything put away before the snow comes. I think I just squeaked by on Friday as I put away the last piece of the puzzle before we got a 6-8 inch dumping of snow on Saturday. We have had a generally warmer fall with a few snow flurries here and there, but this past snowfall might be the one that stays on the ground. The temperature has been above the seasonal normals for this time of year, so it has been nice.

Over the week-end we were looking at some past photos and had a few shots of us skating with the kids out on the lake. We looked at the date on the bottom and it shows November 24, 2003. Here is a shot from today.....Don't think we will be skating any tine soon. Actually we could still put a boat in at the dock right now. If you click on the photo it will enlarge to see more detail.

John-Allen is a new Daddy

Congratulations to John-Allen and Leanne. They gave birth to an 8 lbs 10oz baby boy on Saturday July 9th. Benjamin and mom are doing fine and are already home resting. Chantal got to see baby Ben at the clinic and says he is adorable.

Entering Canada with minor criminal offenses

Here is a letter from our regional tourism lobbying group (NOTO.net) that can help people in crossing into Canada. IF you have any questions, you can contact them for assistance.

The NOTO office continues to receive more calls than ever from guests who are concerned that they may have problems entering Canada due to an old criminal record for offenses such as DUI. A number of operators are actively informing guest about this issue and urging them to call the NOTO office with any questions or for help with the process of applying for rehabilitation.

This advice is a FREE service that NOTO provides to your guests they do not need to pay nearly $1,000 to an "immigration consultant"!

What if a guest has a trip planned but has just discovered that they have a problem? Although the rehabilitation process often takes 4 to 6 months, all may not be lost. If they have a rehabilitation application in the system, they can still request a Temporary Residency Permit in order to complete their trip. Although this will cost them an additional $200, many guests we have spoken with are very thankful that there is a possibility of saving a planned vacation.

We also get calls from operators regarding guests who feel they were treated badly or turned back illegitimately by border officials. We urge those guests to raise their concerns directly with CBSA via their website http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/com-eng.html These concerns will be followed up by officials, usually in the form of a direct phone call to the guest. This process also makes sure that complaints or comments make it into CBSA statistics.

Since I am currently leading this initiative in the NOTO office, please have your guests contact me directly by phone or email me so we can arrange a convenient time to talk about their issue and steps they can take to clear up their problem. I'll make sure they have the necessary information and correct point of contact so their application for rehabilitation goes as smoothly as possible.

Of the many calls we have receive this winter and spring often 5 or 6 a day the vast majority find a solution to their issue and are able to continue a planned trip. We can't help your guests if we don't hear from them, so please use any opportunity you have to let us help them cross the border and visit northern Ontario.

Ice is on the move

The weather has been all over the place this spring, but we usually look for ice out the first week of May. We have had a couple of boats in the water for a week now, to break up the ice around the docks. The last couple of days we are starting to see the ice shift, so it won't be long now. When the ice is moving like this, we have to break up the large pieces with the boats so it doesn't damage the docks. Then we'll tie the boat to the dock and leave it running in gear to have the prop wash push the ice away from the docks. Here are a couple of shots of today's ice. Looking like high water this spring.

Back from the city

Well after a snowy trip back from Chicago, we have made it back to camp. I had a couple hours delay on the side of the road with a broken spring on the trailer. We had to be towed to International Falls, MN. and a few hours later I was back on the road.

There is a quick turn around before I head back to Chicago to attend America's Outdoor Show at Rosemont. It starts Wednesday the 26th and runs to Sunday the 30th. I may end up attending the show by myself, so if anyone wants to attend and give me a hand at the booth, feel free to drop me an email.

Looking forward to getting back to Chicago to see some of our old guests.

Heading to Chicago

We are heading out on the road, and will be starting the All-Canada show in St. Charles IL. on Thursday Jan 13th. The show is at the Pheasant Run resort, so if you close by, hope to see you there. We're easy to find, we are the first booth as you walk inside the show. We will forward our phone to our cell phone, so you can contact us anytime on the 800 number. If we don't answer, please leave a message, as we may just be talking with someone at the show, and should be able to call you back right away.

I have just uploaded the new 2011 brochure to the site, so if you have a friend that wants your copy, but you don't want to give it up....they can download one now.

HST / GST Rebate Update

After finally getting the proper person at the rebate center, it has been determined that the whole problem stems from the fact that they changed the form number and didn't tell anyone. Since your application was filed on the old form, which looks pretty much like the new form, but with a different number on it, it was rejected. Yeah I know.....all I can do is shake my head at this one.

Because there is a file started with your name on it, I can no longer talk to them about your specific file due to privacy laws. So here is what you have to do. Download the new form GST 115, print it out, fill in the appropriate boxes with the same information from your old form and send it in with your correspondence that you received and ask for a re-assessment. They promised me they will process them quickly and everyone should receive their refunds.Now you will need extra postage to send it to Canada, or else your letter will be returned. The applications need to be sent back to the address from the rebate center.

I apologise for this inconvenience, but sometimes the workings of the government are just more that I can believe.

HST/GST rebates

Many people have received a letter stating that their rebate claim has been rejected. As with all government departments, the rebate centre sometimes doesn't know what they are doing!!

If you received such a letter, please contact us with the reference number they provided to you. I will call them and see what I can do to rectify the problem for you.

My head hasn't really stopped spinning. I remember putting all the boats into the water, and before you know it we were taking them out. Somewhere in the middle was our 2010 fishing season. As you may have seen us running around all the time, that "middle" part can go by in a blink and it is only now I can sit back and reflect on the great guests, nicer weather and some great fishing that we had last season.

I have prepared a series of posts that I will start uploading on a regular basis during this month and next with some great stories and pictures that made 2010 another great year at Stanley's.

We're up and running. Well after an incredible busy winter, and a non-stop spring, we are here at opening week and back at it. The house construction has been a long and drawn out process and we are near the end, but still not moved in. Construction took a back seat to getting camp ready for all of our guest, so there hasn't been much progress in the last little while.

We have had a warm and early spring. The ice went out April 13th, earliest ever on record. We have had above average temperatures, and low rainfall. The lake is lower this season, and getting into Violet lake is difficult, but not impossible. The weather this week for opener has been incredible. 70 degree days in mid May. This is better weather that we had all last summer. The fishing has been good, but the fish have already started to move into some deeper waters, since spring is so advanced this year. Don't worry, we'll tell you where they are at once you get up here.

Also a quick note for many of you who have sent in credit card deposits. My bank recently changed my credit card terminal, so now I require the 3 digit code on the back of your card. Since I didn't get this from many of you, I did not process your deposit. Well just take care of things once you get up here.

Getting our Christmas tree

It's always a holiday tradition to go out and find our own tree. We never end up with quite as nice of one as you could buy, but that's half the fun of the whole thing. After enjoying a warmer that normal November, we are locked in a bitter cold spell in December. Tonight's temperature is dropping to -33 C or -27 F. We don't have alot of snow, so we should be making some good ice out on the lake. We finally froze over the last little bit of the lake on Wednesday the 9th.

Our house building project is moving along. We finished the last few outside projects last week, and we can now concentrate on the interior work. I can add another job title to my growing list of skills I have acquired as a camp owner. I can now call my self a spray foam guy, as I am spraying the entire building in foam insulation. It's a dirty tedious job, but it will pay it self off in our cold climate.

Happy news along the shores of Eagle Lake. John Allen (our guide) and his wife Leeann had a 7 lbs. 7 oz. baby boy on November 25th. Both Mom and baby are doing great, and John is a very proud Daddy!!

House foundation

Building a house can also be as much fun moving / shopping for a house.. When we decided to build, I put together a timeline in my head to have the old house down in August, have the contractor start in September, and would like to have it all closed in before the heavy snow arrives in November / December. Now remember, that was the plan, and we all know how the best laid plans go.

The demolition went along as planned, and after only 40 dump truck loads of debris to the land fill, the site was ready. I decided to dig down right to the bedrock, we have problems with the frost and unstable ground in this area, so I wanted to be sure this house wasn't going to ever move. We also have a problem with bedrock in this area, you never know what it is doing underneath the soil.

So here is a picture of my daughter about 9 ft down from grade on the bedrock. So we'll have a crawlspace at the front of the house and a basketball court at the back.

On September 1st, my contractor started laying things out, right on schedule. The footings were difficult due to the quick changing slope of the rock, and the fact that the soil was all clay. If you add a little water to the clay, you get a nice mud!!

Yes it has been awhile since we posted any updates of what has been happening at Stanley's, so I thought I better get back on track and give everyone a good excuse for my lapse in writing. Well the photos below should sum alot of it up. (for those who don't know what they are looking at, this is our house / office at the resort)

This was the house that I grew up in, so it was tough to tear it down, but mother nature and father time both took their toll, on the building, so Chantal and I decided with was time to start from scratch.

I am sure that everyone who has moved before can attest to the joy of the whole experience. With this being said, we did this at the same time as running the camp, tearing down the old house and readying a new place to live. The new place to live happened to be the staff apartments. After several weeks of renovations up there, we moved our family in at the end of July. Ally and Gavan are now sharing a room, but I have told them that the more they help me build the new house, the quicker that they will get their own rooms back.

Moving a complete working office was a challenge as well, as phones and Internet connections were not in place and all had to be added. Needless to say we are all settled and happy in our new spot. A little tightly packed in, but happy.

So what's next... oh yes a new house. That post will follow next.

Hi Chantal and Rob,

As Lyne indicated in her e-mail, this was one of my best experiences for fishing – and I have been at many places in the north of Quebec. Our day with the guide (John) and our portage experience were both memorable. The fishing was great. Lot's of fish and big ones. It will be hard to go back to catching those 12 inch walley's in this area. I guess this means we will have to go back again….

You have a beautiful resort. We enjoyed the beauty of it all, the clear water, eagles flying around, the deer running in the woods, etc….. Not to mention that the cottages are beautiful and comfortable! Boats are spacious and comfortable and your staff extremely friendly and helpful.

As promised, here are some good pictures you may use for your blog. Just for your info, the northern pike was caught on Friday July 17 at Walleye Lake – 44 inches – approx. 25pds

The walleye from Luc is a 22 inches which we had to release…but it was worth the fight. As for Lyne, she caught a 19inches bass…what a fight!!!

Now that we are back home on Vancouver Island we really had to let you know we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Stanley's. Going back after 15 years we were afraid that it would not be the great place we remembered. That certainly proved to be an unnecessary concern. Everything was great, the service, the Sandpiper, your hospitality spread at the fish fry night. Your boats are great, and even in some wavy times in Railroad Bay, they were stable and comfortable. (We commend you on the fine tuned, easy start motor as well -that was a joy.) All in all, this trip reached and surpassed all our expectations, especially the 21 walleye we pulled (and released) in two days! That was fun.

May Opener!

Well you never know what type of weather you are going to get for the opener in May, and sometimes it is an inch of fresh snow. We had a hardy bunch of anglers, and most everyone was out before noon. It did warm up later in the week, but it was a cool and wet spring in 2009.

Oh yeah, in answering my previous post, the ice went out on May 5th, this spring.

We'll it's the million dollar questions as always, when is the ice going to be out.

Well I thought we were a long way off until I walked to the dock this morning and saw the the ice had shifted and moved the stationary dock around. Well time to get some boats in the water and start the ice breaking! So we have two boats in right now, and have cleared all the solid ice from around the docks. We'll have to watch it closely for the next week to make sure it doesn't move in on us.

So my prediction....May 7th. I will keep you posted on how things are looking. As for water levels. we are at high water right now, so there won't be any problems getting to the portage lakes this spring.

Family Outing!

We had a beautiful Sunday afternoon with the family on the lake. First we started out with a snowmobile ride around Tegeau Lake, Buzzard Lake, over Manomin portage and had a hot chocolate break with the kids by the creek.

Next off to try our luck ice fishing. The girls had a banner day and caught everything, they boys will just have to try again another day.

Hockey Camp Week July 25-Aug 1, 2009

This will be our annual hockey camp at Stanley's. Chad my brother will be bringing his skills from Northern Illinois to our local rink in Vermilion Bay. The half day sessions run from Monday to Friday, with the afternoons devoted to time spent with the rest of the family, or on group outings. What could be better, a family fishing vacation, and sending the kids to hockey camp at the same time. Visit the Puckmasters site for more details about the hockey camp skills development.

We were sitting in the house when we watched a wolf come out of the bush and start walk across that lake in front of the resort. I jumped on the snowmachine and managed to get a few shots of this beautiful animal running on the ice. This was a very large timber wolf, and we were suprised to see him out there by himself. Quite often at this time of the year they travel in pairs or small packs.

Where we grow hockey players

This is how we get so many Canadian hockey players in the NHL. We start them young. These are the mighty Mites Jamboree in our little town of Vermilion Bay. The kids are in the 4-6 year old range. Gavan our son is now in his 3rd year of hockey at age 6 and loves it. Him managed to negotiate $5 per each goal he scored in the tournament. He ended up with two goals. The kids are so fun to watch at this age. They fall over like bowling pins, but do have a lot of fun. We don't keep score, and everyone gets a medal at the end of the games.

John's Wedding

On lucky Friday the 13th of February, our guide John married Lee-Ann in a beautiful ceremony in Dryden Ontario. It was a great wedding with a couple of our guests from the Chicago area, managing to make it all the way up for the wedding (Thanks Don, Lynn, Steve, and Tommy). If you look over John's left shoulder, you may see a face you recognize from a couple of years ago. Cal (dock staff & guide) was John's best man.

For most of us we are not used to seeing John not in his guiding gear....He sure does clean up nice. The happy couple are off for two weeks in Panama enjoying some sun and ........of course... some deep sea fishing!!!

We have finally have gotten some nice weather and it gave me a chance to take the snow mobile out for a ride with my friend. The temperature made it to the upper 20's today, but I swear it felt warmer after going through such a long stretch of frigid temperatures.

This cabin belongs to my neighbor which he uses for his trap line and to run dog sled trips to.

Cold Snap

Yesterday morning as I was bringing the kids to the bus stop, the temperature in my truck read -39C or -38F. That's straight temperature, no windchill. If you every wondered, the two scales meet up at -40C = -40F

We just call that "stupid cold".

Back from the Sportshows

We have made it back up north from attending the All-Canada shows in Minneapolis and Chicago. It was great to see many of our old guests and chat with some new ones. Here are some of the most asked questions from this year.

Do we need Passports? - YES, to re-enter the US starting June of 2009, everyone will need a passport, (children can use birth certificates). The US has also just come out with a lower cost secure ID card that will work only between US and Canada.
Will my cell phone work? - Currently only Verizon phones work in the area, but a local telephone company is working on setting up a new network that would be compatible with ATT & Sprint. We'll keep everyone posted.
What's new at Stanley's for 2009 - This spring we are looking to upgrade some of the appliances that have been around for a few years. The new ones are much more efficient on energy and we like to keep ahead of the game and not just replace them when they fail.

We have had a couple of guests that have had no reply to emails that have been sent to us. After a little bit of digging we were able to come to a find a couple issues. As with everyone these days, a spam blocker is necessary to keep you inbox manageable. We have found emails that were sent there accidentally and were missed for a while before they were found and replied to. We apologize for this. We also have had incidents where we have replied back to guests, and our messages were directed to their spam box, and missed by them. We want to make sure that we are able to answer any questions that you have quickly. Happy New Year!

It was great to get started the New Year in Minneapolis at the All-Canada Show. Chantal got a chance to visit with alot of old guests and talk fishing. Rob was watching the kids while visiting with some friends in Charlotte NC. When we left Charlotte Sunday Morning it was 47F, when we arrived back at camp on Sunday night it was -23F. That's only a 70 degree difference.

We are back at camp today for a quick turnaround before heading to Chicago for the All Canada show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles IL. We are working feverishly to get the new site up an running. If you want to try out the beta version of it, try clicking here

Christmas Train

This is a unique event in our little town of Vermilion Bay. Since the Canadian Pacific Railroad travels right by our town on it's route across Canada, the CPR's Christmas train made a stop this year. This fully decorated train complete with stage and several bands stops at cities and towns across Canada and entertains the folks while soliciting donations for the local food banks. The larger towns will get the full stage show, whereas our little town got a couple of songs sung from the balcony of the last car. It was a nice community event with many families out to brave the cold weather to see the performers and Santa of course.

Setting up for Christmas

The whole family went out for our annual Christmas tree hunt on Saturday. We have to pack hot chocolate and cookies and watch Dad try to wrestle a frozen pine tree from the forest. Of course the kids never consider how easy it is to get a tree from the woods, up to the road, and in the back of the truck. It was fun as usual, but quite a bit chilly.

Trying out the ice

With a samll patch of open water in the center of the lake, we ventured along the shore for a little bit of skating and hockey. The ice wasn't too bad, with a few bumpy spots. The kids had a great time, and even Chantal got in on the hockey game.

Starting to make ice

The nights are getting colder as we move to the end of November. While much of the lake is frozen for over a week now, the deeper west arm is still open for the most part, with only the shallow bays being frozen right now. All it could take is one really cold and calm night, and we would have a thick enough layer of ice to hold up to the daytime winds, and then it would be totally frozen. Give it another 2 weeks after that, and then it would be time to get the ice skates and hockey sticks out.

GST Refunds

Many of you are inquiring about the status of you GST refund. The applications were all sent to Revenue Canada's processing branch. It's hard to say when they will get to processing them, but I would expect that you would hear from them sometime in the New Year.

Deer Hunts

We'll we have just completed the last of our deer hunts for 2008. It was a different season compared to the past. We were surrounded by warm weather which pushed the rut back into mid November. The larger buck were not moving as they normally have, and just when the rut was starting to heat up, most of the hunters we heading home.

We did have an opportunity to see and shoot several quality animals though. We were joined by a film crew from Hardcore Pursuit for one week, and were able to film several animals and take two nice bucks. All the fotage will be compiled into a show that will be aired in 2009. We will advise when and where you will be able to see it. The buck pictured is one that we got while filming the show. It had a 21 1/2" inside spread.

Just wanted to drop a note expressing to you what an excellent time our group had at Stanley’s this year. Your resort is “world class” and the friendly service extended to us by you and your staff was exceptional. Special thanks to Bayne and Rhett for their help and superior customer service. This was my second trip to your resort and I brought two new recruits who are now hooked as well. We had an awesome experience and caught a considerable qty of fish. Attached is a photo of nice size (20 inch) Small Mouth that was caught in One Mile Lake. We caught several nice size Pike during the week as well. Again, we want to extend to you our praise for running a top notch Fishing Resort. We will be rerunning next year and Stanley’s is now an annual destination for each of us.

Latest Ice Conditions

We'll the ice started to move a bit today, so we had to put a few boats in and break it up around the docks. It is getting really black, and I am guessing that it will be out by the week-end or early next week. Just in time for the opener on the 17th of May. Joh and Scott are out in the boat breaking the ice.

Well sometimes mother nature tests us to see how well we can take her. It has been a long and cold winter, and just when we start to think that we were getting close to spring, well guess again. At least the kids are having fun
